Students will use their imaginations and activate their creativity by using collage to create characters. Students will be repurposing old magazines or mailed advertisements to select facial features to create their own unique collage, expressing personality and humor.

Discussion:
We are going to explore making art using a technique called collage. Collage is the artistic process of gluing and assembling various materials to a flat surface. We are going to be repurposing, recycling and reusing magazines to explore collage. For our next work of art we are going to use our imaginations and create a silly inventive character by cutting facial features out of magazines and placing any way you would like to form a new character.
So get ready to cut and create characters like no other!!!!!

Inspired Art:
After discussion, have students check out the steps for the creation of their collage character. I have prepared a character for an example. The children can be as inventive as they like.

Steps:
- Find any old magazines, flyers or mailing advertisements.
- Look for eyes, noses, mouths and other parts to cut from the pages using scissor safety. (Parts do not have to match-this makes them even more silly.)
- Start building your character’s face. Once you are happy with the look of the face trace the pieces with a pencil.
- Continue to do this slowly, taking your time and working on one part at a time.
- You should have a collaged character face on one part of your paper with tracing of the shape of the facial features on another part of your paper.
- Next create the shape of your character head and add other inventive parts to the traced shapes.
- You have created a character using collages inspiration.
Take it a step further:
Create a story about your character, give it a name, age, favorite food etc. You can draw details within the shapes that you traced by trying to recreate the same appearance or change it up. You have the outlines to work from, there’s no wrong way to do this. Have fun and make it your own!

End share:
Great job on your collage!!!! Now share with a friend or family member what you have created. What is its overall look? What was the part of this artistic process you found to be the most fun? What was hard? What would you do differently next time? Point out the the parts of the face within your work. What shapes and colors did you use? Give yourself a pat on the back you did great exploring a new technique.
