Lesson
Art can be made out of anything. Artists have been finding different uses for everyday objects for a very long time. There was an art movement to this practice called Dadaism. Dada artists wanted to challenge the art world and break the rules! One of the leaders of this artistic movement was Marcel Duchamp. You can find an example of his art to the right. |

Discussion
We are going to explore making art from everyday objects and the repurposing, recycling and reusing of these objects to explore sculpture. A sculpture is a 3-D work of art; it has form, meaning you can walk around it, it takes up space. For our next work of art we are going to use our imaginations and create an animal out of a toilet paper roll! What? A toilet paper roll?!? Yes, my friends today we are going to use something we normally toss out.
So get ready because today your art is On a Roll!

Inspired Art
After discussion, have students check out the steps for the creation of their toilet paper roll animal. I have prepared an owl for an example but the students can create any animal they would like.

Steps
1- Find a toilet paper roll that is free of TP.
2- Flatten the top of the roll by folding edges down.
3- Begin by pencil drawing the details/features of your animal, starting at the top of the folded rolls.
4- Continue to do this slowly, taking your time and work on one part at a time. Flatten the roll slightly when drawing on it if needed.
5- After you have all the parts of the animal drawn with a pencil begin tracing with a marker.
6- Trace all parts of your pencil drawing with marker until finished.
7- Set sculpture upright and be proud of your new Sculpture! Great job!!!!!

End Objective
Students should understand the concept that anything can be made into art. They should practice looking at everyday objects and imaging what they can be turned into. They should understand that this type of art is a sculpture, a 3-D work of art and it has form (an element of art). Encourage students to discuss the process and point out where they find them parts of visual art’.
